Repainting Your House: The Paints

Repainting Your House: The PaintsAre you a big fan of do-it-yourself projects? DIY projects are very fun and at the same time they can be educating.

If you are thinking of DIY remodeling by repainting the walls of your house, first of all choose the color and the type of  paint. The most popular types on the market are alkyd paint and latex paint.

Alkyd is a resin paint that actually contains vegetable oil. This paint is mostly used on doors, tables and other things where there’s a lot of foot traffic around them.

They are also a great option for outdoor areas, as alkyd paint is weather resistant. You can paint bird houses, benches and fences of your back yard with this type of paint, as it doesn’t peel because of rain or snow.

But you should also keep in mind that alkyd paint dries slowly. Sometimes it takes about 24 hours to dry (depending on the weather and other conditions). It’s good because you can take your time painting and correct your mistakes. But if you have kids at home, this paint might make a little mess. It is also more toxic than latex paint.

Latex paint, which is water-based, dries really quickly and if you want to add another coat over it, there’s no need to wait more than one hour. It is less toxic and has less unpleasant odor than alkyd paint.

Both latex and alkyd paints can have a glossy finish, but I don’t recommend that you go for that effect, as it makes the defects on the wall more noticeable.
