Memory foam was first researched and developed by the NASA space program. NASA was trying to measure G-force pressures encountered by astronauts during take off. The material used for this research was viscoelastic but it was never actually used in space. However, medical research was made, and very soon therapeutic benefits of such a material were discovered. Though viscoelastic gave tremendous support, it was still brittle and lacked any kind of durability. Tempur-Pedic was the first company to manufacture memory foam mattresses used both in the home and hospitals.
A memory foam mattress is basically a foam block that is full of bubbles of air that give way to the shape of whatever is applying downward pressure to it. But this is not ordinary foam. With ordinary foam the bubbles are separate, and the air inside each bubble stays locked in. When the bubble is squeezed the size of the air pocket is reduced according to pressure. Viscoelastic is different: all bubble cells are linked to each other. When pressure is applied the air from one bubble moves to another one. That gives much better support as the mattress takes the exact shape of whatever caused the pressure.
Memory foam mattresses not just give way under pressure, but also mould and offer support due to heat and pressure. The difference between ordinary foam and memory foam is obvious. If you lie down on both of them you will immediately tell the difference. When you lie down on a foam mattress you feel it give way immediately. But when you lie on a tempurpedic mattress it initially seems firm, but you sink into it very quickly. The difference is incomparable.
A latex foam mattress uses vulcanized rubber with a bonded cotton outside layer. Latex foam mattresses are gifted almost with the same features as other types of foam mattresses that help us to avoid body aching and other problems. One of the advantages of latex foam mattresses is that they are resistant to any allergies caused by ordinary mattresses.
Foam mattresses today are very popular among many people. In spite of their high price they remain the main leaders among all other mattresses. As the British say: “I’m not so rich to buy cheap things.”
